The news that they had to restart development from scratch was already playing on my emotions and with the release of Dread my anxiety is spiking. I trust them not to f*ck it up but I can’t help but feel worried. Prime 4 already had a lot to live up to, but in a post-Dread world fans’ expectations must be through the roof. In Dread, she feels like an absolute badass and I hope Retro can nail that feeling too while abandoning Corruptions hand-holding and Halo-esque method to storytelling. Going back to Samus tanky controls in the 3D entries will be jarring. It’s exactly what we were expecting from a 2D Metroid in 2021. Can Retro Studios elevate the 3D entries in the same way Dread did with 2D? Dread feels like a modern evolution. It is a joy to play, setting the standard from this point in time onwards. to the myriad of power-ups that continue to elevate Samus’ mobility (shinespark and so on)… our favourite bounty hunter never felt better to control.
